Embryogenesis

Gabriel Schama, 2024

Working principally in laser-cut plywood, Oakland-based artist Gabriel Schama creates densely layered forms that twist, intersect, and overlap to create compositions that are precise and expressionist. Although the design process begins digitally with complex vector illustrations, Schama’s work is brought to life by the artist’s meticulous craftsmanship. His years of experience in high-end architectural metalwork and furniture design are as evident in the impeccable construction of his work, as they are in the delicate balance of the design.

Whiplash

Nick Bultman, 2024

Nick Bultman is an emerging abstract artist whose work explores the dynamic intersection of nature, technology, movement and color. Self-taught and passionate about developing his creative instincts, Nick transitioned from a corporate career to full-time artistry in 2023, sharing his unique painting process and journey with a growing online audience. Nick’s signature style, known as Velocity Painting, utilizes fluid, expressive strokes as the focal point of his work. Each piece captures and amplifies these forms by meticulously building worlds and superstructures within them, offering a unique perspective on the interplay between control and spontaneity.

Crimson Wave 424

Jan Kaláb, 2023

Born in 1978 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Jan Kaláb is one of the country’s most notable contemporary artists’ today. A founding pioneer of the Prague underground graffiti, and street art scene, formerly known as Cakes, and with his crew, The DSK – together they animated city streets, and spent many sleepless nights in train yards, and perhaps, a few nights too in police stations. Following those glory days, Jan’s work has evolved to 3-D graffiti, light suspended installations, animated NFTs, paintings, and sculptures. His paintings teeter on the edge of sculpture and his sculptures are mostly painted. All the while, shape and color are the main characters of his work, which he pushes and blends together to exaggerate, or minimize, forms.

Claudia Fulshaw

Claudia Fulshaw is the sole proprietor of both CFDesign and Art Wanders Creative Retreats. CFDesign is a graphic design firm in downtown Durham that has been in operation for 30 years. Art Wanders is a creative retreat business that combines Art, Nature, Spirit & Rest into unique retreat experiences across North Carolina.

A native of the Jersey Shore, Claudia has now called Durham home for the past 37 years. Known for being ridiculously creative, a fondness for wild ideas and a propensity for wandering, Claudia’s creative journey has taken her from The College of New Jersey with a BA in Art & Design, to Washington DC, managing a design department for a defense contractor, to a small printing company in Carrboro, NC and finally to her own graphic design business. In 1997, she became one the original founders of the Durham Art Walk.

During the last several years, Claudia’s energy has focused on creating several bodies of work to show and sell locally. Acrylic paint on wood surfaces has always been her medium of choice. She loves how a natural wood surface highlights and also contrasts with color.

The Boulder Garden show highlights some of Claudia’s most recent work, abstract topographic maps of trails, rivers, and roadways. The design and implementation process involves first creating an abstract background painting. Then, the trail, river or roadway is drawn and hand-cut using an Xacto knife. Next, Claudia organically hand-cuts each of the individual contour lines and “rebuilds” the painting by assembling and gluing each piece in place. The final map is her unique representation of the featured trail, river or roadway. She hopes you enjoy the artwork!
